La Voie - The Way (JK)
  • La Voie - The Way (JK)

La Voie (The Way) explores themes about communication past and current, in addition to society’s reliance on modern technology.

Assemblage and collage materials are carefully displayed on the canvas, and include a vintage telephone directory, while found objects are arranged, giving the impression of a payphone that is nearly pushed into extinction, as a result of the use of cellular phones.

This piece generates thought about current communications, and in particular, provokes questions about what elements of communication have been lost through our reliance on modern technology.

“We’ve lost the ability to connect with each other on a deeper level. The current technology, although convenient, operates on an entirely superficial level. Tone, context, eye contact and facial expression are now lost through the use of text messages, social media and emails,” noted JK. She added, “older communications modes like landlines and flip phones, were much less intrusive in our daily lives and didn’t allow for such drastic changes in behaviour.”

JK’s piece focuses on themes about larger telecommunications and technology issues facing humanity, mainly our dependence on computers and artificial intelligence in the future. This raises important questions on how humanity will adopt emerging technologies.

Will technology be a replacement for human interaction, threatening our extinction or will humanity choose to adopt the technology selectively, as a way to improve health, science and the environment? The latter allowing us to retain our ability to connect with each other through verbal communication and spoken words.
