I Like To Ride My Bicycle (two paintings) (Chris Smith)
  • I Like To Ride My Bicycle (two paintings) (Chris Smith)

The bicycle is the main focal point of both paintings by Chris Smith. Smith was able to capture the simplicity and beauty of the two-wheeled chariot within these paintings. A clever signature of Smith, is the addition of the bird appearing on the bike frame (and on the pavement), as the is the artist frequently juxtaposes subjects of a contrasting nature within his work, adding a whimsical element to each scene. The title is also a playful nod to the song (of the same name) by the rock band Queen, of which, Smith is a fan.

The bike in Smith’s painting was inspired by one that the artist came across on Division Street in Cobourg, Ontario, that had been abandoned. Smith was intrigued by the bike, as it had been left on the street for quite some time over many seasons, yet seemingly remaining unchanged.

This set of unique paintings are a visual delight. Smith seems to effortlessly create texture, providing a strong element of realism, as he manages to emulate the different materials of the bike parts (frame, wheel and fender), in addition to the pavement. Light and shadow are also on full display, offering contrasting elements that enhance the verisimilitude of Smith’s work.

I Like to Ride My Bicycle changes our perspective, as Smith’s work highlights the beauty in ordinary objects that we tend to overlook in our daily lives, often taking for granted how interesting and pleasant such items, like a bicycle, can be. Sure to inspire all of us to get cycling!
