Don Key (Chris Smith)

Chris Smith captures the quiet soulfulness of the donkey in this piece. Often regarded as symbols of peace and humbleness, Smith’s painting harnesses the creature’s friendly, simplistic and calm disposition.
 
Smith’s work was inspired by a visit to a friend’s farm off highway nine in Southern Ontario. The farm was home to a variety of animals – chickens, pot belly pigs, a one-legged dog and donkeys. Taken by the engaging and friendly nature of the donkey (mainly the donkey’s willingness to interact with humans), Smith positioned this loving animal as the main focal point of the piece, set against a minimalist mustard yellow background.
 
Don Key brilliantly presents the stillness, beauty and elegance of the mule, reflecting its quiet, pastoral life on the farm!
